Fertility

The British Fertility Society recognises ‘Sub Fertility’ as failure to achieve pregnancy after 1 year of regular unprotected sex. This can be a stressful time for couples who would like to start a family. The current guidance states that your first port of call if you are under 35 years old should be your GP, otherwise, a direct referral to fertility clinics.

In the absence of known causes of infertility such as tubal defects, acupuncture can aid fertility and IVF. Research shows that regular treatments can increase blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, promote regular ovulation and increase sperm quantity and quality.

An Initial consultation will take a detailed look at lifestyle factors and the menstrual cycle. With knowledge of where improvements can be made or a medical diagnosis, a individualised plan can be made for either general sub fertility or the following recognised conditions:

  • ENDOMETRIOSIS

  • PCOS (POLYCISTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME)

  • NON-OVULATION

  • AMENORRHEA

  • POOR SPERM QUALITY

ACUPUNCTURE & IVF

Acupuncture is regularly used alongside IVF to increase rates of success and is often recommended by clinics.

A study in 2002 found that 2 treatments of acupuncture, prior to and following embryo transfer increased the rate of pregnancy to 42.5% from just 26.3% in the control group. It is thought that the acupuncture treatments increased blood flow to the uterus, increased endometrial receptivity, decreased uterine contractions and anxiety and stress hormones which are toxic to the IVF process.
